A cabinet-sized Spirit Quartz cluster from the Boekenhouthoek deposit in Mpumalanga — the only known source of this mineral formation on earth. At 10cm, this is a substantial specimen displaying the full character of what has become one of South Africa's most recognised and sought-after mineral exports.
Geological profile:
Spirit Quartz forms within the sedimentary dolomite and limestone host rocks of the Bushveld Complex, northeast of Pretoria. What makes Spirit Quartz mineralogically unique is its growth habit — a central quartz crystal develops first, then a secondary generation of tiny drusy quartz points crystallises over the faces and body of the host crystal, creating the distinctive "cactus" texture. This is not a coating or surface deposit — it is a second phase of silica crystallisation that encases the original crystal in hundreds of naturally terminated micro-points. The result is a specimen that catches and refracts light from every angle.
